We set off at 8.45am after a fantastic breakfast at Ellerbeck Manor. First stop the beach to wet our toes (and hands) in the Irish Sea before setting off for Cleator. We also collected our pebbles from the beach to carry the 190 miles and deposit on the beach when we get to Robin Hoods Bay.
First challenge, St Bees Head

St Bees Head
|
The route is very straightforward and essentially follows the coast line past St Bees lighthouse and on towards the small village of Sandwith. Once you get to Sandwith some 5 miles from the start you find out you are less than 2 miles by road from St Bees! However, it was worth the extra miles to see the views over the Irish Sea.
Sam had a slight accident just outside Sandwith, tripping over his laces and grazing his knee, thankfully minor in nature and was soon back on the road.

Ouch!!! |
The remaining route to Cleator was uneventful apart from some militant sheep who didn't want us to proceed under the railway near Stanley Pond. We stopped at Moor Row for the 'routine' picture at the Coast to Coast sculpture by Colin Telfer and made it to our hotel just after 1pm and had a great lunch.
Sam says "the best bit of todays journey was seeing all the big hills ahead and walking up them"
Tomorrow, we set off for the most westerly of the lakes, Ennerdale Water and our first Youth Hostel.
