We left around 9am before the sun had time to break through the morning mist
3 1/2 miles march through the forest and along the Ennerdale Valley until we reached Black Sail Hut located in the shadow of Great Gable. Time for a quick rest before we hit the mountains!
Black Sail Hut |
About half a mile past Black Sail Hut is a left turn upwards! A near vertical climb of around 800 feet to a total of 2000 feet above sea level.
Sam skipped up it like a mountain goat, we trailed behind and were very happy to reach the top after around one hour of hard walking (climbing!). There are wonderful views of Buttermere from the top and a final look back at Ennerdale Water shows just how far we have travelled.
Looking down!
From the top of Loft Beck it is a good 2 mile walk to Honister, guided by stone cairns all the way even we couldnt get lost. A good downhill section from Honister and our first views of Borrowdale in the distant made the 2 mile walk to Seatoller fly past and we arrived at Borrowdale YHA in time to see Murray win the first set and go on to Wimbledon glory
The Hostel is located at the side of the river Derwent and is amazing, good food, great bar and some very friendly people, what more can you ask for?
28 miles down and a further 10 miles to do tomorrow, time for an early night!
