Day four - Borrowdale to Grasmere

Another early start and straight into the days walking. A quick mile on the road to Rosthwaite before a nice steady 2 mile climb along Stonethwaite Beck which is a very tiring but beautiful path taking you from 500 feet to 1000 feet above sea level. Louise certainly was feeling the pressure today but managed to get there with a little help from some friends (more of that later).

Did I walk all that way?

This part of the walk skirts around Eagle Crag and Greenup Gill and eventually finishes at Lining Crag and todays first mega challenge!

Nearly at the top

Oh no were not! Lining Crag from the bottom

The picture does not do justice to the climb required to get to the top of this, it really was a difficult pathway. Whilst we were contemplating the best way we met a great group of Australian walkers and they kindly invited us to join them for the remainder of the days walking. with someone to talk to Louise got a new lease of life and practically skipped up the Crag!

Sam soon became the centre of attention and joined the 'boys group' taking over and leading us on to our next challenge across the wet and peaty ground of Greenup Edge to Wyth Burne. A couple of miles of downhill rough path and very wet ground.

Here we had lunch and split into two groups with one group taking the usual 3 and a half mile route down to Grasmere via Far Easedale and the other taking a more extreme pathway over Calf Crag, Gibson Knot and Helm Crag. Louise and Sam went with the first group and, knowing that Louise and sam were safe in their company, I followed the second. What a great way to end the days walk and one that I would have missed if we had not met the Aussies. What a great bunch they were, they set a cracking pace across the ridges and only then did I find out these guys and girls were professional tour organisers, being more at home in the jungles of New Guinea and similar places than the UK!

Four days down and each day seems to be much better than the last, Sam is doing amazingly well and is really enjoying each and every challenge. The weather has been fantastic (perhaps a little too hot!) and we are getting quite a tan in the process. Tommorrow we leave Grasmere for Patterdale via the Grisdale Pass.
